The cinema was empty at the morning session except for two girls who decided, out of the whole cinema, to sit behind me and giggle the whole way through the movie. Murphy’s Law in full force. Options: Tell them to shut the hell up or grin and bear it. I am pleased to say I took the high road and left them in peace. After all laughter is good for the soul. I have been known to ask people to be quiet before but usually I just move though that can be tricky once ensconced in a chair with all my paraphenalia – icecream and drink plus a jacket because this particular cinema rivals a cold European winter even in summer.
Anyway to the movie. Yes, well…. Chris Pine, Tom Hardy and Reese Witherspoon are pretty to watch and there was the prerequisite love and fight scenes, the cliche moves, violence, sex and cardboard characters. One of those made from cardboard was the villain, played by Til Schweiger. Now he is pretty and more my kind of a man than the other two. He’s very successful in his native Germany so why take on a role like this? And poor Angela Bassett, who I have always considered a reasonable actress, had the role of the tough CIA boss with no soft centre. She tottered about on high heels and snapped orders. Puleeze …. give her something to sink her teeth into.
But the most uncomfortable part of the movie was the voyerism aspect where the two men who are competing for Reese’s favours plant cameras in her house and watch her in her private moments and when with her best friend. Mmmm, rather scary to think she might end up with one of them. The only other thing I can say is that they all had great apartments – rather high end, so I guess they pay the CIA agents rather better than I thought.
Should you go see it? If it’s pouring with rain and you need a break from the kids, leave them with Dad and indulge yourself with a little light frippery, just don’t analyze it too much and watch for the giggling teenagers.
