IBS is affected by a brain-gut disturbance so if the therapy takes this direction and is conducted by a therapist experienced in IBS, then considerable benefit can be gained from this approach. A new meta-analysis, published online on Dec. 22, 2015 by the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology shows that the effect of efficient psychotherapy can positively affect symptoms for up to a year after the therapy has ended. This was the conclusion from a study analysis of 41 different trials containing a total of approximately 2,200 people. These studies included cognitive therapies, relaxation and hypnosis and all were as effective as each other. Interestingly the number of sessions also didn’t significantly affect the results. It also didn’t matter if these treatments were in person or online.
These therapies work by altering the negative thought and/or emotional patterns that are associated with IBS. This can help people to accept they have a problem and it also gives them the tools they need to handle a crisis should it arise while not close to a toilet. It helps them stay calm while taking the appropriate steps to deal with the situation.
So, don’t get offended by the suggestion that you may need help from a psychologist. This does not for a second suggest that IBS is all in your head. There is plenty of evidence that it isn’t, but there is also plenty of research that shows that the gut in those with IBS reacts to messages from the brain in an inappropriate way and overreacts, causing symptoms to worsen. Getting that anxiety under control is crucial if you are ever to be truly symptom-free.
"I realized during the program that my highly stressful lifestyle was causing me to trigger my IBS. I've learned through the relaxation and meditation to take more deep breaths throughout the day and listen to the relaxation session."
