We humans are amazingly good at procrastination – it could be one of our greatest talents.
“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone”
― Pablo Picasso
Do you want to endure IBS symptoms all your life, to die with your belly in turmoil, never knowing a day of peace? If you do nothing, that is the surest thing on earth that will happen. There is no cure for IBS so waiting around for it to disappear is like waiting for the sun to burn out. It will happen but not in our lifetime.
Don’t get me wrong, we all make excuses so that we don’t have to make a decision.
When faced with two equally tough choices, most people choose the third choice: to not choose.
How true is that and that’s where procrastination comes in and the excuses trip the light fantastic (that’s a dancing term, for the non-dancers).
Here are a few of the excuses I have heard for not getting the diet sorted:
Excuse 1) Now is not the right time.
- “I am so busy with work and/or with my kid’s homework and activities.”
- “I have a holiday coming up and I will think about it after that.”
- “We have just put the house on the market and I am packing up everything – perhaps when we have settled in our new home.”
- “I am a teacher and school has just started – maybe in the next holiday break.”
- “I have just changed jobs so a new diet would be overwhelming.”
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you didn’t have to contend with a troublesome tummy and your need to know the location of every toilet in the vicinity while you are this busy? Imagine if you could work, teach, deal with the kids, move house, go on holiday with a calm gut? I can’t begin to imagine knowing there is an answer but choosing not to take that solution, and so continue to suffer.
When I discovered the low Fodmap diet, I moved heaven and earth to understand it and get it right for me. It took time but I let nothing stand in my way. And thank goodness I did. My life has been revolutionised by that determination. The last decades of suffering are a distant memory and my present and future can now be everything I choose them to be. I am in control of my life, and IBS no longer rules my every decision.
Kelly Reidinger, one of my clients said:
“I feel like I have all the weapons I need to tackle my digestive problems for the rest of my life!”
Ed from England wrote in an email:
“I have not had any major IBS symptoms in the four months since starting the Low Fodmaps Diet to the time of writing this Testimonial. I am a new man!”
Excuse 2) I don’t have the money.
- “I can’t afford any specialty food or coaching on my budget.”
- “The roof needs fixing. I have to pay off my upcoming holiday.”
- “Our lounge suite needs replacing.”
- “My kid wants a pony.”
- “The tennis club subscription is due.”
Yes, money can be a very real factor, but no, there are no specialty foods involved. In fact, a low Fodmap diet includes almost no processed food. You have to eat food as close as possible to its source, and that’s a cheap way to eat.
Of course, a visit to a dietician or coaching does mean a one-off fee in order to eliminate your symptoms once and for all. But what a fantastic investment in your health, in your life and that of those around you who you spend your time being cranky with because you are miserable. Weigh that up against the benefit of having a new lounge suite. Research shows that a few days after a person makes a material purchase, they are no more or less happy than they were before. So, that’s money spent for no good reason. But imagine having your health back, imagine the everlasting joy that will bring you.
This is what my client, Sue emailed me:
“I am totally happy with how I have felt. I have been walking the dog without fear! Being fearless about going out is such a great feeling, I have been walking with confidence. Over the years I have noticed my freedom slipping away and losing the ability to be out doors has been a great loss to me. The freedom to be mobile again without fear is a prayer answered and so is this diet. I'm putting my health first which is a rarity. I haven't felt this good in years!”
And my client, Aidan from Ireland, who is a long distance runner emailed me:
“I am feeling the best I have felt in easily 10 years. I have energy again and feel like I am getting value from food again after all these years. Pretty amazing.”
Excuse 3) My spouse doesn’t support my decision to get help and try this diet.
- He/she says he/she won’t eat that way.
- That I just have to eat healthy and I will be okay.
- That I am a hypochondriac and need my head examined.
Now, let’s be clear, the majority of spouses are wonderfully supportive in trying conditions because living with a spouse who has IBS is no party. It can be rather a downer for sure. But I have heard all the above reasons for not allowing a spouse to do something about their miserable IBS symptoms.
I know that many of you think you would kick such a spouse to the curb, and so would I. But then think again about how easily we are influenced by the opinions of those nearest and dearest to us. Of course we are. We want to please them and we need their support for something like this, so the slightest negativity around it could put you off making the decision to take your health into your own hands. That doesn’t make you weak, that makes you accommodating, which is needed to keep a marriage strong. So your job is to persuade them that this will help them too. That you feeling well and joyful will improve their life as well.
My client, Tom from Indiana wrote this:
“As we were nearing the end of the program my wife said, ‘You are a totally different person’!! I guess that statement sums it up.”
And Rachel from Texas said:
“After some convincing of my husband who realized how much I’d been struggling to find things to eat, I joined the program, and just the other day, he said that it was life-changing for me. Calm belly, calm mind!”
And one last quote:
“A year from now you may wish you had started today.”
