Have you ever wondered why the healthier you eat, the sicker you feel? Well, you are not crazy. It is an unfortunate fact that the conventionally healthy foods like vegetables, fruit, beans and fibre are not always our best friends. Not if we have irritable bowel syndrome. Beans almost kill us and we have to avoid certain vegetables and fruit while restricting others. When you have irritable bowel syndrome, the healthier you eat, the sicker you feel because so many healthy foods are high in Fodmaps. A low Fodmap diet which restricts the Fodmaps in foods is the only way to eliminate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Have a look at the video for more information. Transcript of the Video Conventionally, what constitutes healthy food? Heaps of vegetables, fruit, fibre, beans, only a little red meat. We all know those blogs with great followings which dish up super healthy food, full of colourful raw or steamed veges, beans, lentils, rare foods with strange names which look … [Read more...] about The Healthier I Eat, the Sicker I feel
Banana Cranberry Mousse – Low Fodmap & Gluten-Free
When my son was small, my mother used to make him banana ice cream with nothing but bananas by pushing frozen bananas through a meat mincer. It came out as a wonderful tasting ice cream that fooled everyone. No one could guess that it was nothing but bananas. Anyway, I wondered if I could replicate it without a mincer. Well, actually, the answer is no. So I have made a mousse instead. I wanted to give the bananas a little more flavour so added dried cranberries and chopped them into the frozen bananas with a blender. Then I gave the mixture a little texture as well as extra flavour by adding coconut and flaked almonds. By using the frozen bananas, the mixture is very cold which resembles a very soft ice cream. This is a simple, tasty dessert that you could easily make anytime as long as you have some bananas in the freezer, and you could vary the flavours according to what you have in the larder. I had thought of adding peanut butter but Dario had finished it all. This recipe … [Read more...] about Banana Cranberry Mousse – Low Fodmap & Gluten-Free
An Intensive Road Trip – Amsterdam, Cologne, Luxembourg, Reims, Paris, Bruges
After the cruise, we took a plane to Amsterdam where we picked up a car and set off on a whirlwind road trip. We were told the car had no GPS so we struggled with maps until after Luxembourg when I found by chance that a GPS had indeed been installed. After a few false starts when Adriano thought he knew better than the GPS, we floated along with the horrendous navigation part of the journey taken care of. I had thought that my head was never going to be lifted from a map and the relief was enormous. She did put us wrong a couple of times including having no idea where she was when we got to the airport area of Amsterdam. She took us 20 kilometers to get to the hotel which was a few kilometers away, and even then, we had to disregard her and take over. But apart from that, she made life a breeze, especially in heavily built up areas like Paris. I don't think I could ever have got us to our hotel there without a divorce. Here are a few highlights of the trip. I have been to Paris a … [Read more...] about An Intensive Road Trip – Amsterdam, Cologne, Luxembourg, Reims, Paris, Bruges
Where have I been?
Please excuse my absence from my twice-weekly posts on this blog but I have been away enjoying myself in another part of the world. For the first week I was on this ship: But first we spent a day in Copenhagen, Denmark, which is where the cruise started. Our first stop on the cruise was at Stockholm, Sweden, which is a pretty, organised city situated on 14 islands so there is water everywhere. Then on to Helsinki, Finland where we drove out to one of the oldest towns in Finland, Porvoo. On our way back to Helsinki, we passed this rather majestic church sitting all alone in a field. When we arrived back in the city, the heavens opened as we ran to the indoor markets. It was worth getting completely drenched for the lovely array of food. Our next stop was St Petersburg. There are not enough superlatives to describe this glorious city. If you visit anywhere, you have to see the majesty of St Petersburg before you … [Read more...] about Where have I been?
Cocktail Parties on the Low Fodmap Diet & a Low Fodmap Potato Salad
Many folk become almost reclusive with irritable bowel syndrome and fear going out to eat and so their social lives suffer. They equate food with pain and embarrassment so an invitation to eat out instils the fear of the devil in them. Low Fodmap Drinks & Rosti Pizzas
On the low Fodmap diet for irritable bowel syndrome, we are rather restricted on what we can drink. But that's only in comparison with the wide range of drinks on offer. Once upon a time, people drank water, milk, tea, coffee, alcohol and some fresh juices. Today the supermarket can have aisles of different drinks of all colours, flavours and sizes with varying degrees of health benefits. And so that's what we now expect, but the low Fodmap diet cuts out a large percentage of those and that takes a degree of adjustment for some people. For the most part we are a lot better off because most of the drinks in those aisles are seriously detrimental to our health. Anyway, have a look at the video to see what you can drink. Video Transcript Welcome to this video. Today I'm going to talk to you about what drinks you can drink on the Low FODMAP Diet. Water Well, of course you can drink water - that is the one that you have just got to learn to love really because it has no FODMAPs … [Read more...] about Low Fodmap Drinks & Rosti Pizzas
