I have been corresponding with a dietitian, Clarice Hebblethwaite, who champions the low Fodmap diet and she has given me some interesting advice on healing the gut while on the diet. Take digestive bitters, ½ lemon juice or 1 dessertspoon apple cider vinegar in a little water before meals to increase acid levels in the stomach. Consider including daily fermented/cultured foods. These are foods which healthy bacteria or yeasts feed on. So all the fermenting and production of gas happens over a few days/ weeks and most importantly not in your body! So these foods are no longer fermentable or FODMAP rich. The resulting food is very rich in probiotic bacteria and yeasts which keep your digestive tract and immune system in good health. For many with anxiety or increased stress in their lives, relaxation techniques are key. They accelerate healing when we are in our diaphragmatic breath. It is then we actually can repair, digest and heal plus switch into fat metabolism, which is … [Read more...] about Banana Pancakes – low FODMAP breakfast or dessert
Zucchini Hummus – a low FODMAP dip
The complaint I hear the most from low Fodmappers is that they don't know what to eat for snacks. Those of you who work outside the home are probably used to dashing to the nearest cafe or bakery to buy something high Fodmap. But once you know your IBS is caused by the presence of high Fodmaps in your food, that isn't an option. So, it requires a little thought in advance and perhaps a little preparation if you want variety. Snacks galore: Lactose-free yoghurt Rice crackers with peanut butter A few nuts (excluding pistachio, cashews and more than 10 almonds) Buckwheat crisp bread with a low Fodmap topping like butter (butter has almost no lactose because it is a fat) and strawberry jam A rice cake with a couple of slices of tomato and canned tuna (in spring water because too much oil can be a gut irritant) Corn-based crackers with cottage cheese (up to 4 tbsp is low Fodmap) and some lettuce and/or a few slices of courgette Low Fodmap fruit like strawberries (8), … [Read more...] about Zucchini Hummus – a low FODMAP dip
A Crunchy Vegetarian Quinoa Salad – a gluten-free recipe and low FODMAP
Adriano is away racing somewhere down south and won't be back until Sunday but I still have to cook for Dario and me but I decided to keep it simple. I don't use quinoa very often because it is so expensive here - around $10 for a small packet which is enough to serve four. But it is a super food for those on a low FODMAP diet and will slide down without an issue. I added a whole lot of low FODMAP vegetables and topped it all with toasted pinenuts and dressed it with a simple vinaigrette, which could have a garlic-infused oil in it for a little extra punch. What I actually did when I cooked the quinoa, though it is optional, was to cook a teaspoon of cumin, coriander powder and salt in a little oil before adding the quinoa and toasting it a bit before adding the water. That added a lovely exotic flavour to the dish. Do you remember the giveaway for the $500 Amazon card here? A winner has been chosen and it is Rachel M, a very thrilled viewer who has already gone shopping. Thank … [Read more...] about A Crunchy Vegetarian Quinoa Salad – a gluten-free recipe and low FODMAP
Asian-Style Chicken Salad – Low FODMAP
I had leftover meat from a chicken I roasted last night, and the vege tray in the fridge was full of vegetables so I invented a simple Asian-style salad that could include the chicken. Make it a little bit ahead of time so the chicken can soak up the dressing. It won't wilt the veges because there is no lettuce or anything similar. I had baked bread yesterday so that was put on the table and we had ourselves a feast. I have realized that I put too much sweet food on this blog and I am going to rectify that. You would think that was all we ate, which simply isn't true or I would be the size of a bus. Part of my freelancing is that I take photos for food bloggers who don't have the time and/or skills to take them themselves, which means I am usually making other people's recipes for dinner. Hence the lack of dinner recipes here. But I am sure I can work out a way to sort that. Watch this space. Jam Cookies – Gluten-Free Recipe and low FODMAP
I have another simple cookie recipe for you, using a clever method of activating the properties of the tapioca flour before adding it to other ingredients. This is also a recipe best eaten fresh and not stored. Coconut flour is not great for storage because it continues to absorb moisture from the room and the cookies become too soft. As always, I am full of plans followed by action and I have another one afoot but I can't tell you about it for a few weeks. I hope it comes off because I am investing a lot of myself into it. Meanwhile I have 3 active blogs I keep going, which is a bit of a handful. In fact, I must write a post for my blogging blog, Bloglosophy, before I go to bed. I want to write about how to take beautiful photos of ugly food. An art I think I have conquered. At least, my clients think so. I have just been given another big bunch of recipes to photograph for other bloggers. I love it! Banana Mousse Tarts – gluten-free recipe and low FODMAP
I have been a absent for a wee while but I really wanted to give the $550 giveaway a good chance by leaving it at the top of the blog for a while. I also have another reason for my absence. As you all know by now, I am freelancing, having left a terribly stressful job last December and I have been helping out bloggers as part of my freelancing, including doing blog critiques. What I have discovered is a real gap in the market for a blog dedicated to these newbies and so I started one up. It is called Bloglosophy and I already have 25 posts on there about the basics of blogging, including SEO, load times etc. It has had a wonderful response and I am loving the enthusiasm of my readers for the information that I am putting up there. I would love you to pop on over and have a look and let me know what you think. https://www.bloglosophy.com/ I have also been marketing my Low FODMAP cookbook to nutritionists and it is selling well on Amazon, which is a relief. I am so happy to be getting … [Read more...] about Banana Mousse Tarts – gluten-free recipe and low FODMAP
