I am doing a whole series of videos on Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the low Fodmap diet, and this is the first one. It talks about the 8 symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and I explain each of the symptoms and why they happen. You can either watch it here or click through to Youtube in the bottom right-hand corner. Video Transcript Welcome to Strands of My Life and this video on the low FODMAP diet. Today, I'm going to cover the eight symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and low FODMAP intolerance. Number One Food equals bloating. FODMAPs like fructose should be absorbed through the lining of the small intestine. But when an individual has difficulty doing this, the fructose continues on down into the large intestine where it's treated as a foreign substance. That causes the bacteria down there to go to town, and this consequent fermentation results in bloating, diarrhea or constipation, as well as flatulence and stomach pain as a result of muscle spasms and … [Read more...] about The Symptoms of IBS and Lamb Salad – Low Fodmap
A Low Fodmap Dinner Party
I had family for dinner last night and cooked a completely low Fodmap meal. I know that scares those of you on a low Fodmap diet and you have no idea where to start and think you have to cook "normal" food when people come over to eat. That is so not true and I will walk you through what I served and how it is low Fodmap. Obviously my family know I am on a low Fodmap diet but if you had guests over who knew nothing about your health issues, they would never guess from this meal. Tomato & Pesto Polenta Bites We started out with these tomato and pesto polenta bites while we all sat up at the kitchen bench and drank our first glass of wine. Just make sure you fill your glass with ice cubes first - that way you can have a second glass later. Otherwise, it is is one glass total for the evening and then you pass onto water, which is the very best drink for those of us on this diet anyway. A Story of Recovery I just have to tell you the story of one of my clients who has just completed the Inspired Life Low Fodmap Coaching Program. I will call her by her first name only, though I am sure she wouldn’t mind you knowing who she is. Dawn, a young woman in her thirties, has a major gluten intolerance (Coeliac disease) but she knew that wasn’t the whole story because, even though she eliminated gluten from her diet, she still felt miserable and was often afraid of having an “episode”. She did test after test and went to doctor after doctor and three-years ago she got the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome. Then she ended up in the gastro unit at the local hospital in pain where a young doctor mentioned the magic words, “low Fodmap diet”. Dawn asked what it was and he said he didn’t know much about it except that he had heard it helped those with IBS. At this stage, Dawn was on twelve different medications. She went home and Googled low Fodmap diet and found my blog. She … [Read more...] about Strawberry Banana Smoothie – low Fodmap

What alcohol can I Drink on the Low Fodmap Diet? I often get asked what alcohol can be drunk of the low Fodmap diet. Alcohol is a gut irritant and we don’t really want to be further irritating an already upset gut, but I will go through the various alcoholic drinks and give you some advice on amounts, if you really must have a drink. Wine You can drink dry wines because there is not a lot of sugar in them but stick to 150mls/5 oz and no more or you will suffer. What you can do to extend it to two glasses is fill your glass with ice cubes first and then pour in the wine. The first sips will be pure wine and it will slowly get weaker as the ice melts but you can then have a second one. This is a tip given to me by a delightful Australian lady who has just finished my low Fodmap diet coaching program. Thank you, Judy. Wines not to drink are: Riesling, Sauterne, Dessert wine, Sweet wine, Port, Marsala, Madeira, Vermouth, Muscat, Liqueurs, and Rice wine. Spirits Spirits do not … [Read more...] about Peanut Butter Ice Cream – low Fodmap

The women on the low Fodmap coaching program which has just concluded have all had great results, thanks to their commitment and dedication to implementing everything that was asked of them. They are living proof that this program and the diet work. But I will let a few of them talk for themselves. This is what they have said: Dawn "My life with IBS was a daily struggle just to make it to the next day. Pain, medication, no answers and no hope that I would ever feel like a normal person again.... And then I met Suzanne online, purely by chance. It was one of the best things that could've happened. Here is someone who knows.... Someone like us that has been there and lived what we've lived. Someone who's done the research and has the plan to help get your life back. I cannot stress enough how worth it this course has been and how much hope I now have that my future will be and can be kept pain free." Kellie "The Inspired Life Low Fodmap Coaching program was the solution I … [Read more...] about Curry Dip – Low Fodmap

I was thinking about what causes so many people to fail on the low Fodmap diet. As I wrote about in my last post, this is a complex diet and there can be many reasons for failure, like lack of knowledge, lack of willpower, lack of support and so on, but I see a few things over and over again. Not Being Prepared Unlike others, we can't nip out to a cafe to get some lunch in our break from work and grab a bread roll or a piece of quiche. It would be fatal. We must always have a supply of low Fodmap food with us at all times. It is crucial that we never get hungry because that's when we will slip up. Hunger is a powerful life force that exists for our survival, and what do we head for when we are hungry? Fatty, sugary food. That's what the body wants. Sugar for a quick fix and fat for the longer-lasting energy it gives us. Our bodies know what they are doing and this worked well in the past when everyone was active, and computers and desk jobs didn't exist. So the first thing we must … [Read more...] about Spicy Spring Rolls – Gluten-Free and Low Fodmap
